The stigma surrounding medication

I've been criticised for using antidepressants over the past four years.
People don't question anyone who takes medication for blood pressure, diabetes or heart problems but  everyone seems to have an opinion about antidepressants.

Comments such as: 'you don't need those', 'I pulled myself out of depression without medications', 'that's you addicted to them' are frequent.
Great, I say, good for you.  My issues are complex and if taking a pill or three dampens down the urge to kill myself on a daily basis, then so be it. Surely that can't be a bad thing?
Yes, they come at a cost. I feel like a junkie with all the medications I have in bags and if I forget a dose, bring on the sweats, shaking, hyperventilating and panic.
I've experienced many side effects, usually when starting the tablets but I still continue to take them as the alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

Who are you to judge me? Depression isn't a choice, choosing to be an asshole is.

Creation of the blog

1 in 4 people suffer with a mental illness or know someone who has. I have created this blog as a personal log of my struggle with depression and anxiety. I hope it is of use to fellow sufferers, loved ones who want a better insight and to the ignorant to educate them.
